Lawrence Barn
Historic Community Center
Volunteer Projects

24 May 2005

A major goal of the Lawrence Barn project is to give every person in the town the opportunity to work on the barn or project is some way to let them feel that it is indeed a “community” center.

There are many jobs to be done and the following is a first draft of the list of construction projects that may be done by volunteers.  The Steering Committee is hopeful that numerous ‘leaders’ will come forward to organize and co-ordinate various elements of the work.

Site Plan & Survey Work:
This has been contributed by Bob Cormier and Cuoco & Cormier

Demolition of the old building:
This work has been done at reduced rates by Doug Orde and Hollis Construction

Excavation and Foundation Work:
The majority of this work is being contributed by Amos White and Homes by Paradise

Move beams back to Hollis:
The beams will be loaded in Berwick by Arron Sturgis’ crew.  Unloaded in Hollis under his supervision.  Tractors and/or crane will be very useful.  Trucking is by Honi Glover, Balcomb Trucking and by Law trucking.  We need to co-ordinate weekend trucking with weekday supervision.  Crane work is being contributed by Herm Stickney and Pioneer Tree.

Organize Beams in preparation for Raising:
Arron & crew on site Mon – Thursday organizing.  He can use some help at this time.  This is when we should wash the beams.

Barn Raising:
Friday and Saturday.  Fri AM is best time for citizens to drive their pegs into the frame.  Other chances will occur as the frame goes up.  Arron can use 6-8 men to help.

Ship Lap sheathing:
Arron’s crew will do the roof.  Volunteers are to do all the walls.   We need to get all the walls of the old barn sheathed prior to installation of the SIPS panels.  The pine boards for both the interior ship lap sheathing and the exterior board and battens are being provided at below cost by Lorin Rydstrom and Seaboard International

SIP Installation:
Mostly by the Panel Pro’s.  Arron’s crew will be there to make the connections from the old frame to the new SIPS.

Install Windows and doors:
The windows and small doors will need to be cut into the SIPS panel and then flashed and trimmed using pine boards.

Exterior Batten and Boards:
We are using rough vertical pine boards that are 10” and 12” wide.  The 1x5 batten will be nailed over the SIP panel (& TYVEC) and then the pine board.  The walls are about 15 feet high.  Care needs to be taken to keep them plumb and to finish neatly with large boards at corners and doorways.

Frame end of barn, bathroom shed and entry area:
Keith Adamyck of Adamyck Homes
has offered to co-ordinate this framing work but need lots of labor to keep our costs to a minimum.  There is the 22 x 30 foot section of the barn to be built with 2x6 walls and 2x12 rafter roof system.  The shed roofed bathrooms are 28’ x 20’.  The entry and storage area is 10’ x 16’.  The priority is to get the main barn roof framed to allow the roofing to be completed.  The building materials for this and other areas of work are being provided at cost by Jerry Eckman and Reeds Ferry Lumber.

Standing Seam Metal Roofing:
The roofing labor is being contributed by Jeff Taylor and Viking Roofing.  He is also providing the materials at cost.  Jeff can use some help handing materials up to the room and in preparation of the ends and edges of the metal.

Interior Partitions:
After the concrete floor is poured these walls need to be framed to allow electrical wiring to take place.

Plasterboard Walls & Ceilings:
The Sheetrock labor and materials are being donated by David McCartney and Gemini Construction.

Restore Old Threshing Floor:
We have nearly enough of the old boards to recreate this historic area.  Approx 12 x 30 feet.  Someone will need to inventory the old boards and resolve how to patch in new material neatly.  This area will be used for educational / demonstrations.

Install Kitchen:
The Cabinets are donated by John Testa of Kitchen Concepts.  Other members of the kitchen team are Denise April and Chuck Mussin.

Sliding Barn Doors:
Two of the barn doors will be made to slide fully open in the good weather and to preserve the feeling of an old barn.  These doors need to hang from tracks and be fully insulated.  This needs to be completed before we can have a weather tight structure.

Swinging Barn Doors:
The two barn door openings on the west end of the barn will be fully glazed.  The swinging barn doors here are purely aesthetic as to have them operable would compromise the legal egress required.

Interior Painting:
All plasterboard walls and ceilings will need three coats.

Exterior Staining:
Cabot’s Stain company
has agreed to contribute the stain.  We need the labor!

Build New Recreation Commission storage building:
Location has yet to be determined.

Water Supply:
Roger Skillings and Skillings Well Company
are donating the labor and materials for the pump and equipment necessary to develop the water pressure on this site.

Plumbing:
Joe Cianci and J.J. Ciampa & Son
are providing the plumbing materials and labor at reduced rate.

Electrical:
Paul Armstrong & Dunwell Electric
are providing the electrical design, materials and installation at discounted rates.

 Audio and Computer Wiring:
Jim Belanger & Beltronics
are donating this labor and material.

 Heating and AC:
David Brassard
is co-coordinating the heating system.

Landscaping:
Pat Coughlin and the Garden Club
are organizing the landscape design and materials.  There will be requirements for walkways, small stone walls and limited plantings.
